Assessing Ages and Stages

As parents we’re often concerned with our child’s physical development, and we panic when milestones are delayed or unmet. All healthcare workers are trained to tick these milestones off, and when we have to make a visit it’s the physical manifestation of development that is given a gold star, so’s to speak.

But what if when we looked at the child, it was the emotional and psychological development that came first? What if, as a society, we valued the whole-child’s development and made referrals for lack of attachment and emotional security/ well-being?

Psychological and emotional well being is JUST as easy to notice, and has a HUGE impact on all future relationships, the parent-child relationship included. So many parents are busy with the physical care of their children, that the psychological impact on their parenting is not noticed until later years….it used to be teens, but now we’re often seeing divided relationships by the age of 7/8…this is not usually coincidence.
